Programs

​Nursery Program- Younger (2 1/2 to 3 years old)

 

Our Younger Nursery program 2 1/2 years old by 9/1) provides a safe, nurturing, creative environment that will allow your child to grow emotionally, socially, physically and intellectually. The primary goals of our Nursery program are to help your child:

​

  • Develop feelings of security and success

  • Appropriately express thoughts and ideas

  • Follow one and two step directions

  • Work independently and with others

  • Engage in cooperative play – share, take turns, listen to others

  • Learn problem-solving skills

  • Strengthen fine and gross motor skills

  • Become more independent with self-help skills, which includes potty-training

 

Our Younger Nursery classes employ the Creative Curriculum which is a theme-based program designed to promote your child’s natural curiosity about the world around them while developing important skills relating to early literacy, beginning math, science, social studies, art and music.

In order to allow for individualized instruction, each nursery class typically has 14 students; however, class is limited to 16 students. All classes are led by an experienced, highly qualified teacher and an assistant. Each month, teachers plan a variety of hands-on activities related to a particular theme or topic. Some of our themes include: Family & Friends, Signs of Fall, Shapes, Colors, Health & Nutrition, Plants, Insects, Farm, Amphibians & Reptiles and Community Helpers. Your child will also experience a variety of enriching programs visiting from the community that reinforce thematic topics and concepts learned in class.

​Nursery Program- Older (3 years old)

Our Older Nursery program (3 years old by 9/30) provides a safe, nurturing, creative environment that will allow your child to grow emotionally, socially, physically and intellectually. Children must be potty-trained to enroll in this program.

​

Our Older Nursery classes employ the Creative Curriculum which is a theme-based program designed to promote your child’s natural curiosity about the world around them while developing important skills relating to early literacy, beginning math, science, social studies, art and music. The primary goals of our Older Nursery program are to help your child:

​

  • Begin to recognize letters and sounds

  • Build phonological awareness

  • Develop pre-math skills with counting, sorting, patterning, etc.

  • Appropriately express thoughts and ideas

  • Work independently and with others

  • Engage in cooperative play – share, take turns, listen to others

  • Learn problem-solving and critical thinking skills

  • Strengthen fine and gross motor skills

Pre-Kindergarten Program (4 years old)


Our Pre-Kindergarten program (4 years old by 9/30) is a stepping stone to kindergarten. It provides a wide variety of opportunities to help your child grow socially, physically, emotionally and intellectually. Our goal is to provide a foundation for learning that will prepare him/her for kindergarten and beyond. A developmental checklist that aligns with curriculum goals and objectives is issued twice a year and reviewed at each of the two-parent/teacher conferences.


Our Pre-K classes employ the Creative Curriculum which is a theme-based program designed to promote your child’s natural curiosity about the world around them while developing important skills relating to literacy, math, science, social studies, art and music. Kindergarten readiness skills are also emphasized. In our program children learn to:

  • Work independently and with others, share and take turns

  • Develop feelings of success

  • Acquire writing/reading skills

  • Build problem-solving/logical thinking & motor skills

In order to allow for individualized instruction, each Pre-K class typically has 16-18 students; however, class size is limited to 20 students. All classes are led by an experienced, degreed teacher and an assistant. Each month, teachers plan a variety of hands-on activities related to a particular theme or topic. Some of our themes include: Making Friends, Signs of Fall Solar System, Health & Nutrition, Dental Health, Plants, Insects, Farm, Reptiles & Amphibians and Community Helpers. Your child will also experience a variety of enriching field trips reinforcing thematic topics and concepts learned in class.
 

Kindergarten Program (5 years old)

 

Our Kindergarten program (5 years old by 9/30) encompasses all areas of study as outlined by the Virginia Standards of Learning -SOLs. To ensure that foundational skills are covered, our course of study uses the following curriculum materials: The Superkids Reading Program and Everyday Mathematics. These language arts and math programs are designed to provide your child with a foundation for learning that will prepare them for first grade and beyond. In addition, students participate in a variety of theme-based, hands-on activities relating to science, social studies, music and art. Each class is limited to 18 students; however, having a class of 16 students is typical as this allows for individualized instruction. An experienced, degreed teacher and an assistant lead each class.

The Superkids Reading Program is an engaging core literacy curriculum that teaches all aspects of reading seamlessly integrated with the language arts. Reading, spelling, handwriting, grammar and composition are integrated in step-by-step lessons that build skills systematically. Children become confident readers and writers through the building of a strong foundation in phonetic elements. In addition, teachers meet the specialized needs of each student through small group guided reading instruction. Through guided reading, students practice using decoding and comprehension strategies in an appropriately leveled text. Other curriculum support materials include: Words Their Way, Making Meaning and Being a Writer.

Everyday Mathematics is a research-based and field-tested curriculum that focuses on developing children’s understanding and skills in ways that produce life-long mathematical power. It is a spiral curriculum that revisits concepts repeatedly over time and with increasing difficulty. Areas of study include: counting, numeration, measurement, geometry, patterning, data collection, graphing and calculator use. Children are taught to make real world connections to math concepts which are taught through the hands on use of manipulatives.

Enrichment Programs

 

A variety of enrichment programs are offered at Sunnybrook each afternoon throughout the school year.  There is an additional charge for children to participate.  These programs are provided by individuals outside of Sunnybrook Day School, but these persons are held to the same standard of required background checks.  Click the links below to learn more about each program.

Summer Camp

 

Summer Camp follows a rhythm that is similar to our school year and runs June through August. The educational program follows weekly themes with opportunities for lots of fun through outdoor play, water play, field trips and in-house programs.  Our summer preschool is staffed with the same high quality teachers who work in our school year program. All staff are CPR and First Aid certified.  Registration begins in April.
